Winter weather is frightful, especially for our four-legged family members! While we dawn our winter gear, we have to keep in mind that our animals are also susceptible to the colder weather- even if they love frolicking in the snow.
Here are a few key tips to help your pets stay safe this winter.

Wipe their paws after being outside
Your dog’s paws can pick up all kinds of toxic chemicals from spending some time outside such as salt, antifreeze, or de-icers. Make sure to wipe off your animal’s paws to prevent them from licking it off and becoming sick. Using pet-safe de-icers for your home can add an extra level of safety.
Avoid the ice
While out on a walk, try to avoid frozen lakes and ponds. Slipping on ice, or even breaking it, can seriously injure your pet.
Wear reflective gear
Daylight savings brings us shorter days in the winter, causing many people to walk their dogs in the dark. Stand out at night by putting reflective gear on your fuzzy companions. This will also help you stand out from the bright snow.
Dress for the weather
Some animals are more susceptible to the cold than others. If your fuzzy creature has shorter hair, it's best to dress them in a sweater, or jacket, before leaving the house. If you want to go the extra mile, booties will help protect their paw pads from getting chapped and snow from building up between their toes.
Outside shelter
If you have dogs (or cats) that prefer to stay outside, make sure they have a warm and dry shelter to curl up in. Add in plenty of blankets and pillows for maximum comfort and warmth.
Make sure pets are chipped
Snow storms can cause fences to break, allowing for your pets to escape. Microchipping your dogs and cats will make sure they are reunited with their rightful owners quickly!
