When thinking of adventures in the snow during the winter season here in Boulder, we realize that there’s more to it than just skiing and snowboarding! Today, let’s take a look at some of those other options for how to enjoy that crisp mountain air.

Snowshoeing at Brainard Lake

Want to do some specialized “hiking” while playing in the snow? Head over to Brainard Lake and strap on a pair of snowshoes. With over 6 miles and 14 acres of snowy playscape to explore, this activity can keep you and your family entertained all day! Of course, snowshoeing isn’t the only activity at Brainard. You can also bicycle, camp, fish, and more! Check out their full roster of events and activities here:

Tubing the Hills

Colorado has tons of snowboarding and skiing, but what if that’s not quite your speed? Well then, how about tubing!? Slide down the mountains at a more comfortable pace, and with less risk, by checking out these locations and more:

  • Aspen Tubing
  • Breckenridge Tubing
  • Copper Mountain Tubing
  • Echo Mountain Tubing
  • Hesperus Tubing
  • Keystone Resort Tubing
  • Snowmass Tubing

Exploring Ice Caves

Want an adventure that’s similar to hiking, but differentiates itself? Look into exploring some of the ice caves of Colorado. Dig into these natural formations that freeze over in winter weather, preserving their beauty until the next spring season.

Ice Skating at Vail and Elsewhere

Not only does Vail have spectacular views and snow sports, it has three outdoor ice skating rinks plus one indoor rink! They have rental skates available, or you can bring your own pair of blades to slice the ice. With hot cocoa, snacks, and adult beverages nearby, you’ll have no shortage of things to do during your Vail day adventure. Alternatively, there are an additional 20+ outdoor and indoor skating rinks throughout the state. Here are a couple of resources to find and plan your next day on the rink.

Cross Country Skiing

There are literally dozens of areas to cross country ski in Colorado. Trekking areas include such spots as Aspen, Breckenridge, Crested Butte, and several more. And, with miles of trail to travel, you can definitely get that your heart pumping, or take things in at a more chill pace to enjoy the scenery. Here are a few resources for your next cross country trek:

Sledding with Pups

Want to run with the dogs this winter? Try your hand at dog sledding! Most dog sled tours run for a duration of 1-2 hours, with plenty of cocoa and tea to drink after the adventure. This year, you can race along the snow, while in the company of man’s best friend! Here are some locations that host the pups:

Hot Springs for Relaxation

Ahhh, the relaxing you’ve been searching for all season - hot springs! Dip your toes, then plop into the natural and man-made springs dotted throughout Colorado. Soothe those tired muscles, meditate, and rejuvenate your body and mind in the calming waters.

Winter Camping

How about staying out all night and sleeping in the snow!? Can you handle the temps? If so, try some winter camping at any of the numerous campsites that are open for the season.

Don’t forget, you will need different gear and preparation for a winter camping excursion. We love REI’s guide, which gives details for nearly everything you will need for a successful camp time.

Scenic Drives around the State

But, what if the weather outside is frightful? If it’s too cold for your liking, and you have a vehicle, head out for a drive to take in the sights and sounds. Colorado has tons of paved and plowed roads, mountain passes, and more for you to explore. If you have a rugged vehicle, you could even go “off-roading” in the snow and ice.

Hiking!

Because, of course, how could we just "forget" about hiking!? Let's keep it simple here, though. Here are “all” of the trails, from none other than AllTrails.

Winter is a magical time of year, with all the snow and ice transforming our landscapes. This year, get out there and take in the sights of the season! We hope that some of these ideas help you plan your next adventure in the snow.

We at WK Real Estate want to wish you the happiest of times during this season. If there is anything we can help you with, please don't hesitate to contact us.
