Why Homeowners Should Think Twice Before Tinting Double or Triple Pane Glass

By Kent Zaitz - February 26, 2015

Homeowners need to be careful when tinting the windows to their home, as it will  void the warranty from the window manufacturer. Tinting companies will say they will warrant the glass, but I wouldn't want my warranty coming from from a firm that may or may not be in business in 10 years.

What's the problem?

The problem is that heat comes through a window in two ways, conduction and convection. Conduction is the sun heating the glass and warming it so the warmth is conducted to the other side of the glass. Convection is the light waves passing through the glass and heating objects on the other side of the glass when the light waves strike the object and change wave length into heat radiation. With tinting the conduction heats the outer pane, thus heating the space between the glass panes (same for all glass, tinted or not), but now the convection light rays pass through the outer pane of glass, strike the tinting on the inside pane of glass, change wave length and become trapped between the two panes of glass. You now end up overheating the space between the panes and can pop the seal between the panes.

The bottom line...

I have seen it be fine for a couple of years, I have seen it pop every double pane glass seal in an entire house in 2 to 3 years. Sometimes there is not a problem for many years. Either way the manufacturer warranty is void. We tell buyers of our new homes to NEVER tint the windows. The older the windows the easier it is to break the seal between the panes.
