Community service isn’t a new concept but its importance in society can’t be underestimated. In the Boulder area alone, there are over 100 organizations that engage countless people throughout the community. People who of all age groups contribute to the invaluable service of volunteer work both locally and abroad.
On the local level these community organizations can include social service organizations such as Blue Sky Bridge, The Boulder Homeless Shelter and Mother House. Nonprofit providers and associations such as the Community Food Share and Hospice of Boulder County and faith based programs like Sister Carmen Community Center. The question one could ask is this, why is community service such an important value and character trait for a person to possess? And the answer often given is this, that community service and all aspects of volunteer work aren’t about money. It’s about giving back to your community or your global family and it’s about more than compensation. It’s about sacrificing yourself in order to make a meaningful contribution for the betterment of someone else.
Community service might be summed up by describing it as ordinary people doing extraordinary things on behalf of their neighbors. For more information, the following links are excellent resources. www.bouldercounty.org/dept/communityservices/pages/default.aspx
