Sundance is coming to Boulder January 21 through 31, 2027. Here’s what to know before tickets go on sale, including pricing, important dates, new ticket options and what we know so far about planning your festival experience.

After more than four decades in Utah, the Sundance Film Festival is heading to Boulder for the first time in January 2027. With 11 days of films, filmmaker conversations, special events and programming spread throughout Boulder, the festival is bringing some changes along with it.

If you're thinking about attending, now is the time to start planning. Festival passes and ticket packages go on sale to the public October 15, while single film tickets won't go on sale to the public until January.

Here's what to know before you decide which option is right for you.

The 2027 Sundance Film Festival will take place in Boulder from January 21 through 31, 2027. World premieres will take place January 21 through 26, with additional screenings continuing throughout the festival. An online festival will also be available nationwide January 28 through 31.

How Much Do Sundance Tickets Cost?

There are several ways to experience the festival in 2027, ranging from individual $37 tickets to packages with 10 screening tickets.

Pricing and package details are based on the information currently available for the 2027 festival and may be updated as Sundance releases additional information.

How Do the Sundance Ticket Packages Work?

If you're wondering whether buying a 10 ticket package means you'll be assigned 10 specific films, the answer is no.

The packages give you a set number of tickets that you can use to select individual screenings. For example, if you purchase a 10 ticket package, you can use those tickets to choose 10 different screenings from the festival lineup, subject to the package's specific rules and ticket availability.

That could mean seeing 10 different films, choosing several screenings from a particular part of the festival or building a schedule around the dates you'll be in Boulder.

The important thing to understand is that you purchase the package first and select your specific screenings afterward. Package holders receive an earlier opportunity to select screenings before individual film tickets go on sale to the general public.

That also means you don't need to know which films you want to see when you purchase a package in October. The 2027 film lineup is expected in December, giving package holders more information before they select their screenings.

Which Ticket Option Is Right for You?

The best option depends largely on how much of the festival you plan to experience and when you expect to attend.

Planning to see a lot of films throughout the festival?

The Full Festival Ticket Package includes 10 in person screening tickets, which you can use to select specific screenings once ticket package fulfillment opens. Package holders receive an earlier opportunity to choose their screenings than the general public buying single film tickets.

This may appeal to someone planning to spend several days at Sundance and wanting the flexibility to choose films from across the festival once the lineup and schedule are released.

Only attending the second half?

The Second Half Ticket Package includes 10 tickets for screenings from January 27 through 31.

It's designed for people who want to experience Sundance without attending during the opening portion of the festival.

Mostly free during weekday afternoons?

The Matinee Ticket Package includes 10 tickets for weekday screenings before 5 p.m. from January 25 through 29.

At $350, it is one of the lower priced 10 ticket packages and is specifically built around daytime screenings.

Interested in encore screenings?

The Encore Ticket Package includes 10 tickets for eligible encore screenings for $675.

This gives package holders the opportunity to see select films and programs that are screened again later in the festival.

Only interested in a few specific films?

You may want to wait for Single Film Tickets.

Individual tickets are $37 and go on sale to the public January 8. By then, the full film lineup and screening schedule will be available, so you'll know exactly what you're buying before you purchase.

Are you 18 to 25 or an eligible student?

The Ignite Ticket Package offers 10 in person tickets plus five online tickets for eligible attendees ages 18 to 25.

There will also be $15 Ignite Single Film Tickets for eligible students and attendees ages 18 to 25.

Will the Venues Matter When Choosing a Package?

Possibly, but you won't need to worry about that when purchasing your package in October.

Sundance's 2027 festival footprint includes venues at CU Boulder, downtown Boulder, Chautauqua, the Dairy Arts Center and Cinemark Century Boulder. The festival says the locations are all within approximately a two mile radius, with local transportation connecting the various venues.

The 2027 film lineup is expected in December, followed by the detailed screening schedule. That's when we'll know which films are playing at which venues and when.

For package holders, that information could be useful when choosing screenings. If you're planning to see several films in one day, you'll want to consider the time between screenings, the distance between venues and your transportation options.

The good news is that you don't need to have your schedule figured out when you purchase a package. You'll select your individual screenings later, once the lineup and schedule are available.

What Is New About Sundance in 2027?

The move to Boulder isn't the only change. Sundance is also expanding its programming for its first Colorado festival.

The four central competition categories will each grow to 12 films, compared with 10 previously. Those categories are U.S. Dramatic, World Cinema Dramatic, U.S. Documentary and World Cinema Documentary.

Other sections, including Premieres, NEXT, Midnight and Family Matinee, will also expand.

The festival's Offscreen programming is expanding as well, with additional conversations and events, including live podcast recordings.

And after a two year pause, New Frontier is returning. The program explores the intersection of film, art and emerging technologies and gives artists an opportunity to experiment with new forms of storytelling.

Sundance is also introducing new awards from the International Federation of Film Critics, known as FIPRESCI. World Cinema Grand Jury Prize winners will also become eligible for consideration in the Academy Awards' International Feature Film category.
