- St. Vrain Greenway - 180 Ken Pratt Blvd, Longmont, CO 80501
Although the St. Vrain Greenway is still a work in progress, it's already gained a reputation as one of Longmont's premier cycling routes. Currently stretching about 8 miles from Golden Ponds Nature Area to Sandstone Ranch Nature Area, this multi-use trail offers spectacular views and a well-groomed surface ranging from dirt to crushed gravel and concrete. It will one day be a part of the complete Front Range Trail, which will stretch from Wyoming to New Mexico.
- McIntosh Lake Nature Area - 1905 Harvard St #3.5, Longmont, CO 80503
Nestled between the Front Range and the west end of Longmont, McIntosh Lakes Nature Area is lovely in any season, but especially in fall. Trails that encircle the lakes are open to bikes and foot traffic, and the view across the water to the snow-capped peaks beyond is nothing short of stunning. The lakes are also open to non-motorized boats, and they're ideal for a fall paddle.
- Open Sky Loop - 7100 Pike Rd, Longmont, CO 80503
A 5.6-mile loop trail within Lagerman Agricultural Preserve, the Open Sky Loop traverses mostly open meadows and prairies. Though the shade is sparse, the scenery in autumn is still exceptional as the grasses take on golden hues and the trees that dot the preserve light up with yellow and red. The Open Sky Loop is used for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, and leashed pets are also welcome.
- Golden Ponds - 2651 3rd Ave, Longmont, CO 80503
Offering 2.6 miles of trails in addition to the western trailhead to the St. Vrain Greenway, Golden Ponds Nature Area is always a great spot for a hike or a bike ride. The 88-acre Park includes four ponds created from former pit mines, and the wooded areas around them offer some great fall color. Keep an eye out for waterfowl as you explore the ponds; cormorants and great blue herons are commonly sighted on the water.
- Rabbit Mountain Open Space - 15140 N 55th St, Longmont, CO 80503
A nature preserve that offers 6.2 miles of hike-and-bike trails, Rabbit Mountain Open Space is tucked away on a broad valley between the mountains west of Longmont. The trails range from easy to moderate difficulty and provide sweeping views of the Rockies, including some beautiful fall colors. The trails at Rabbit Mountain are open to equestrian use as well.
- LoBo Trail - 8403 Brittany Pl, Longmont, CO 80503
The LoBo Trail extends 12.8 miles from Longmont to Boulder, connecting the two cities and providing a phenomenal resource for hikers and cyclists in the region. The grade is mostly flat and level, with a concrete and crushed gravel surface that makes it accessible to explorers of all ages and abilities. The scenery ranges from suburban neighborhoods to forest and farmland, and you'll see ample fall colors along the way.
