From Rails to Roadways: The Hidden Histories Behind Boulder County Neighborhoods
How well do you know your neighborhood? Behind the street names, architecture, and parks we pass every day are often fascinating backstories that connect us to Colorado’s colorful past. Some of our favorite communities have roots in territorial surveying, early electric rail service, and ambitious settlement plans. Here are a few local examples that prove every neighborhood has a story to tell.
Baseline Subdivision – A Road That Mapped a Territory
If you’ve ever driven Baseline Road, you probably know it runs for 38 miles across four Colorado counties. But its name carries a deeper historical meaning.
The story starts in 1854 with the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which set the 40th parallel as the dividing line between the two territories. Later, when the Colorado Territory was created in 1861, surveyors once again used the 40th parallel—this time as their baseline for defining where three states met.
To mark and access their survey line, they cut a “baseline road.” Boulder’s own Baseline Road sits precisely on the 40th parallel on world maps and keeps that pre-statehood surveying history alive in its name.
Interurban Park – Riding the Electric Rails
Platted in 1908, Interurban Park was named for a futuristic mode of travel at the time: the Denver & Interurban Railroad (D&I). This electric railway connected Boulder and Denver, making 16 trips daily from early morning until after midnight.
The original vision was grand—linking Boulder, Denver, and Fort Collins—but only the Boulder-Denver segment was ever completed. From 1908 to 1926, the route provided a quick, affordable way to travel between the two cities.
By the mid-1920s, America’s growing love affair with the automobile cut into ridership, and the trains were replaced by buses in 1926. Today, Interurban Park’s name is a nod to that short but pivotal period when rail travel was king along the Front Range.
Longmont’s East Side Historic Districts – A Colony’s Legacy
Longmont’s oldest residential neighborhood dates back to 1871, when it was platted by the Chicago-Colorado Colony—a group of settlers inspired by Horace Greeley’s Union Colony in Greeley. Their vision? A community built on agriculture, temperance, and cooperative water resource development.
The neighborhood’s architecture tells its story: elegant Queen Anne, stately Victorian, and sturdy Craftsman homes line the streets, reflecting the tastes and prosperity of Longmont’s early years.
Many of the city’s founding families lived here—names like Collyer, Atwood, Mead, and Warner—and their legacies can still be felt in Longmont’s civic life and preserved historic character.
