The end of the year is such a powerful time. We all have our own traditions in December and some are more enjoyable than others. A long time ago I realized I was creating way too much stress for myself trying to create “perfect” holidays for my kids and family. I baked, I shopped, I wrapped presents. I decorated and made sure the right holiday music was playing for each event. I hosted dinners and brunch, attended 3-5 parties each week, worried about getting each item on my children’s always growing list, and at the end of the day all of these things that were supposed to make me feel joyous and festive, left me feeling completely exhausted and unsatisfied.
Now, I know that all of this was self imposed, and I think at one point I actually enjoyed it. I’m not sure when it spiraled out of control, but I do know that the day I announced to my family that the new plan was to give gifts and things we never used to a less fortunate family and have a small holiday meal by ourselves, my attitude improved greatly. I started paying attention to December in a whole new way. There are so many holidays that happen in December besides Christmas. There’s also Hanukah, Kwanza, Boxing Day, and Winter Solstice.
It’s a powerful time of year no matter what your belief system is. I decided that my favorite holiday is Winter Solstice, since that is when the days begin to grow longer and we inch toward the returning light. Focusing on light, the holiday lights, the Hanukah Candles and the thought of eagerly anticipating a bit more daylight in every new 24 hour period gives me a reason to smile and celebrate. What a simple and low cost way mark a happy time of year. Happy Holidays Everyone!
