Founded in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, a senator from Wisconsin, Earth Day was an attempt to make us aware of the everyday things we take for granted, that have a negative impact on our planet.
After 42 years, while we have made great strides, some things remain the same. We are still at war; we still use amazing amounts of gas and oil, although we have certainly scaled down the V8 engines that were once standard on every car; we still struggle to keep our water clean and available; and even though our attention to air quality has improved, when you drive into Denver from the mountains, that all too familiar cloud of smog sits over our Queen City of the Plains.
Being in real estate gives us a heightened awareness of the word “home”. It’s our business to help people find the home of their dreams, sell a home in order to move to a new adventure and invest in homes as a retirement plan.
Earth Day offers a moment to consider the home we all share. The foundation we build on and create our lives on each day. What an amazingly intricate and beautiful landscape we have been entrusted with.
I can’t imagine anyone caring much about a multi-million dollar mansion, with acreage and a pond, if it only had cement surrounding it and views of steel, soot and a dark sky. So, here’s a toast to Mother Earth. May we be constantly reminded that we are her guests and she deserves our care and deepest respect.
