Colorado Stereotypes That Are True

By Hanna Pagliaro - July 14, 2020

Just like any other state, Colorado is filled with stereotypes- many of which are true or partially true (we'll debate about Subaru being the unofficial state car another day). Here are a few stereotypes that will help you spot a true Coloradan out of a crowd.

1. Is it "mountain" or "mountain"?

If you're a true Colorado native, you would have read these two different ways. Yes, this is true. We do not pronounce the "t" in mountain. Just don't ask why!

2. We use the mountains to navigate

If you have a very large landmark to help with directions, why wouldn't you use it?! This makes navigating really easy on the Western Slope and Front Range- things are either away from the mountains or towards the mountains (or West or East - we never use Right or Left).

3. Everyone has a dog

Colorado is a very dog friendly state, and it's very uncommon to find someone that doesn't have at least one dog. Many shops allow dogs inside and on the patio at restaurants. You'll also find sidewalks in front of businesses lined with water dishes!

4. Coloradans love their sports teams

We are very proud of our sports teams, even when they don't play the best. On game days, you'll find everyone wearing Broncos, Nuggets, Avalanche, or Rockies gear. And downtown Denver will be packed with people flocking to the games.

5. Beer is in our blood

Well, when the state has the second most breweries in the country it's kind of hard not to enjoy a beer. Some of the more well-known breweries that started in Colorado are New Belgium Brewing, Odell Brewing Company, Left Hand Brewing Company, Oskar Blues, and Coors Brewing Company.

6. There is snow all year long

This one is partially true. In the mountains, it's not an uncommon thing to wake up to a dusting in July or August. It actually happened just a few weeks ago near Steamboat Springs. You can also find some snow to play in at Rocky Mountain National Park. Many visitors drive up there just to visit the snow that stays up there year-round.

7. We are very proud of our green chile

You really don't want to get in a heated discussion about whether you think New Mexico's green chile is better than Colorado's. It's a very sensitive subject. Just about every restaurant will either serve it as a side or something will be smothered it in and you can find a jar of it in almost every household.

8. What are snow days?

Don't expect to get many snow days in Colorado. Our state is very equipped to handle the large amounts of snow that we get. Especially in the mountains where schools only close when it's 40 below, and that's just because the buses won't start!
