Best Mountain Towns for Second Homes in Colorado

Our daily routines can be overwhelming at times, making a second home surrounded by Colorado’s abundant sunshine, great outdoor living and natural beauty a haven in a world sometimes too chaotic.  Check out these 5 mountain towns to create your sense of peace and serenity with plenty of opportunities to get outside and reconnect with what makes you, you!

Vail

A small town of just under 5,000 people, Vail is best known for its world class skiing and luxurious lifestyle.  Located in the heart of the mountains at just over 8,000 feet, the valley has a beautiful backdrop for summertime activities as well. Hiking, horseback riding and fishing are just the beginning!  With some of the highest home prices in the state, home amenities can be extensive and offer a true retreat.

Crested Butte

Tucked into a quiet corner of the mountains, Crested Butte has amazing natural beauty.  It’s an outdoor playground rich in mountain biking, hiking and skiing.  Wildflower meadows and alpine lakes complete the picturesque town.  Restaurants, coffee shops and fun local businesses add to the local flavor, making this town a great place to buy a second home.  It’s about 5 hours from Denver and 30 minutes from Gunnison, which keeps the resort accessible but quieter than some of the ski resorts closer to the Front Range.

Fruita

Located just outside of Grand Junction, Fruita is a unique town with some of the best mountain biking trails in the country. It’s also a popular place for kayakers and rafters.  As its name implies, Fruita’s original economy was centered around a quality fruit growing operation.  It’s now better known for its outdoor athletics, while still maintaining it’s Western charm and character.  In the summertime you can find weekly rodeos, music events, and town wide running races.

Estes Park

Closer to the Front Range, Estes Park is a short drive from major metropolitan areas such as Denver, Fort Collins and Loveland.  Home to Rocky Mountain National Park and a great downtown area, Estes Park is a gorgeous location for a second home.  Wildlife viewing, especially the famed elk herds, are abundant throughout the area. With local events like the infamous Stanley Hotel’s annual Halloween ball, music concerts and crafters fairs, Estes Park is the epitome of small-town charm.

Grand Lake

This small town is nestled on the largest natural lake in Colorado and has plenty of water sport options.   Boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing, and swimming are just a few!   Grand Lake also boasts a boardwalk, theatre, restaurants, camping, wildlife viewing and more.  The annual Buffalo Days summer festival is a local favorite with music, axe throwing, corn hole competitions, and pie making contests.  As the western entrance to Rocky National Park, the pristine natural landscape is stunning.  With a population of around 400, Grand Lake is a laid back and relaxing refuge.
