Eric Rutherford is one of six commercial real estate agents here at Wright Kingdom. In addition to receiving his MBA at the University of Colorado, Eric has also earned the CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Member) distinction. Eric served as an officer in the US Marine Corps, and graduated from the FBI Academy in Virginia. I sat down with Eric to gain some insight into his background and his partnership with longtime commercial broker Tom Hill.
1. You served as an officer in the Marine Corps, and later as a DEA Agent near the border to Mexico. Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you ended up as a commercial real estate agent here in Boulder?
After I concluded my service in law enforcement I returned home to Boulder with my wife, Brenda, to start a family. With the intent of becoming a commercial real estate broker, I enrolled in the University of Colorado’s MBA program and graduated in 2004. After receiving my MBA I came to work at Wright Kingdom Real Estate and became partners with Tom Hill.
2. Tell us a bit about how you teamed up with Tom Hill, a well- established commercial agent here in Boulder, how you two work together.
Tom and I always had a great rapport, and when I joined Wright Kingdom he took me under his wing. Having been a commercial broker in Boulder for over three decades, Tom was experienced and well-connected in the industry. We have very complimentary skill sets and together we have provided a higher level of service than if we had remained individual brokers.
3. Since you teamed up in 2004, you and Tom have established a reputation as premiere commercial brokers in this market. Tell us a bit about how you’ve been so successful in this industry.
Simply said, I love my job. Tom and I go above and beyond for our clients because we have a passion for our profession and aim to be the best in our industry. I also served as the President of the Commercial Brokers of Boulder for several years, which enabled me to build relationships with other local commercial brokers, and remain engaged in local topics and trends in the industry.
4. Boulder is considered a unique commercial market compared to the Denver-metro area. Can you give some insight into the advantages of working with a Boulder agent versus an agent from another market?
As a local property owner I am well versed in the rules and regulations specific to Boulder and the surrounding communities, and I have an acute understanding of local rent rates. Relationships also play a key factor in this market. I maintain relationships with a network of local landlords, and often am privy to exclusive listings that are not yet officially on the market.
5. Community involvement has always been an important aspect of your career. Can you tell us about some of the local organizations that you have served over the years?
I’ve served on local and Federal boards including the City of Boulder Downtown Management Commission, as well as the Federal Community Development Block Grant Board. The Federal Community Development Block Grant Board allocates Federal grants for capital improvements of local non-profits, and makes a difference in the lives of the underprivileged members of our community. I currently serve as President of the Boulder Valley Rotary Club and we are involved in several international projects in places such as Peru, Nicaragua, and Kenya.
Eric is an experienced, trusted commercial broker here at Wright Kingdom, and is available to assist you with purchasing or leasing commercial property in Boulder and the surrounding communities.
