Nederland is nestled in the Rocky Mountains just forty miles south of Estes Park and only a thirty minute drive from central Boulder. This small town is a local favorite for its charm, beauty, and unusual things to do. Whether you’re a local and looking for somewhere new to explore, or you’re passing by the area while you’re on vacation, here are the things to do in Nederland that we love.
The Carousel of Happiness
The hand-carved animals on a restored 1910 Looff carousel are what make the Carousel of Happiness one of the most popular attractions in Nederland. With a lengthy history, the carousel is more than an attraction and boasts an impressive history. You can ride the carousel for $1 per person or watch the 100 year-old gears turn from the upstairs viewing area.
Frozen Dead Guy Days – March 8-10, 2019
Frozen Dead Guy Days is a popular festival that is celebrating its 18th year in 2019. Coffin racing, a polar plunge, and human fooseball are just a few of the exciting events that commemorate the unusual history and death of the original frozen dead guy, Bredo Morstol.
Nederland Mining Museum
Admission is free to the Nederland Mining Museum! Try your hand at panning for gold, learn about the historic mining communities of Boulder County, and discover what it was like to be a miner back in the day.
Nederland has many gorgeous hiking trails. In the Roosevelt National Forest that surrounds Nederland, you can hike to picture-perfect lakes, waterfalls, stunning mountain views, and so much more.
Peak-to-Peak Scenic Byway
The Peak-to-Peak Scenic Byway stretches from Nederland to Estes Park, and takes roughly over an hour by car. The drive is incredibly scenic with mountain views left and right and is particularly beautiful in the fall when all of the Aspen trees are a stunning yellow color.
Eldora Mountain Resort
If you’re visiting Nederland in the winter, you’ll notice ski runs on the mountains right next to you. That’s Eldora Mountain Resort, the closest ski resort to both Boulder and Longmont. It might be smaller than the bigger resorts off of I-70, but the ease of access and local vibe make it a favorite place for a quick day trip.
